Lonzerotti’s Italia Restaurant opened in the fall of 1987. The restaurant is located at 600 East State Street, Jacksonville, Illinois, in the Chicago and Alton Railroad station building. The station was transformed into a restaurant by original owners Mike and Betty Goldasich. Special features of the restaurant include utilization of the original waiting rooms as dining rooms and location of the entrance lobby in the station’s office and ticket area. The kitchen is located in what was the station’s baggage room and the food prep area was originally used by the railway express.

The building’s architecture follows the “prairie school” design, a style that was made popular by a number of Chicago’s leading architects. The architecture is characterized by simple, elegant geometry featuring horizontal lines, wide roof overhangs and hip roofs. Hardwood trim throughout the restaurant is original and was refinished after the removal of many layers of paint. The bar was relocated from the Jacksonville Transfer Company.

In early 2016 the restaurant was closed for several months while the current owners, Frank and Susan Whitney and their sons David and John, completed an extensive kitchen renovation. Lonzerotti’s re-opened for business on June 17, 2016. The restaurant serves classic Italian dishes along with new American dishes created by Chef Richie Fredrick. Outdoor seating is available for drinks, and for dining. Guests are welcome to view the station herb and vegetable garden located north of the building.
